Montefeltro & Urbino – Independent
Locked between the Apennines and the Adriatic coast, the region of Le Marche has remained unchanged over the centuries. This was formerly the seat of Federico da Montefeltro, who presided over one of the most influential courts of Renaissance Europe.
The walk sweeps across the northernmost corner of the region, following in the footsteps of the Dukes of Montefeltro. From their beginnings as the Counts of Carpegna near San Leo in the 10th century, pass through their former strongholds and battlefields, culminating in their greatest achievement, the glorious court of Urbino. The grand ducal palace houses an impressive gallery containing some of the most important Renaissance artworks in the world.
The route takes you along ridges with wide views and a profusion of flowers and butterflies in spring.

On certain days the terrain is more rugged, including rougher walking across fields – please make sure that your foot wear provides sufficient ankle support.
All ATG trips include facilities and options so that you can arrange to walk as much or as little as you like – or not at all - and your Route Manager will be able to advise you on public transport or taxi options.

Your Personal ATG Route Manager
My name is Paolo, and I live in Pennabilli, a picturesque village near Rimini, Italy. Although I’ve always lived here, my passion for languages and cultures has taken me across Europe and the United States. When not looking after ATG clients I work as an interpreter and translator, and in recent years, I have also been teaching English and German at high schools in Rimini. Since 2022, I have been part of the ATG team—a role I find deeply fulfilling. I truly enjoy meeting new people through this work, and I especially appreciate the chance to explore the natural beauty around my home while on assignments. Hiking through the hills and paths of my region has become a favourite aspect of my job. I am married and have a daughter, who sometimes helps me with my ATG tasks, we look forward to welcoming you!
"Paolo was exceptionally good really did go the extra mile in all matters."
"Paolo was terrific. He went out of his way to make everything as pleasurable as possible"
"Paolo was very professional and very welcoming. We enjoyed meeting up with him and he was very helpful booking restaurants for us. He is very enthusiastic and passionate about the area- which we loved."

Route Book
The ATG Route Book is a detailed, day-to-day guide. The book anticipates your needs with easy-to-follow instructions, maps, plans and other information that will guide you to discover the best that the area has to offer and is the key to the success of an independent holiday with us.
Walking App
Your Route Manager can provide you with a link to download an app to your smartphone. This app provides the GPS track for your route on your phone. You can use this digital support to find your position and navigate the route, even without an internet connection or mobile phone reception.

Accommodation & Meals
You can expect each hotel to be one of the most characteristic, comfortable and best located for travellers on foot, with the character and sometimes the standard varying from place to place. In more remote areas hotels may be of a generally lower standard in relation to their ‘star ratings’. Much of this itinerary is ‘off the beaten tourist track’ so expect something different on occasions – and we think you may be delighted!
Single travellers are accommodated in double rooms for single occupancy for a supplemental charge.
On this route, upgraded accommodation is available at some overnight stops, as specified on the itinerary.
Breakfast is included and there are suggestions in the Route Book about where to buy provisions for a picnic lunch, as well as restaurant recommendations. Dining options often include a choice of restaurants that can be pre-booked for you by your Route Manager.

Food & Wine
Ideally situated between the coast and the mountains, Le Marche brings together all the produce of both sea and land. It also merges cooking styles borrowed from its neighbouring provinces: simple, rustic techniques from Emilia Romagna united with the more intense southern flavours of Umbria. The result is an extremely varied cuisine. The most notable local wine is the white Verdicchio, although no less important are the red wines Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno. The Route Book contains a section on the cuisine and wines of the region, and a list of recommended restaurants en route. The Route Manager will be pleased to help you with any queries, requests or advice.
Flora & Fauna
Springtime brings an abundance of wildflowers, both alpine and Mediterranean. The huge variety of orchids are a particular treat. The woodlands are predominantly beech and oak. In autumn, look out for mushrooms and truffles – you might spot locals out picking them. Our Route Book provides further detail while apps such as ‘LeafSnap’, ‘Flora Incognita’, ‘ChirpOMatic’ and child-friendly ‘Seek by iNaturalist’ can identify the flora and fauna en route.
