Small Miracles: the crucifix of Bevagna.
ATG trips: Way to Assisi, Umbrian Hill Towns (Journeys) Umbria & Assisi (Footloose)
In 1998 Umbria became headline news throughout Europe: some of the Italy’s most famous paintings had been destroyed by the worst earthquake in decades. The world’s concern – together with millions of pounds of restoration funds – poured into the town of Assisi.
The ATG Trust, aware that earthquakes do not limit their damage to famous towns and famous frescoes, approached the little-known town of Bevagna to ask if we could help.
One project in particular meant a lot to the people of the town: a wooden sculpture of the crucifixion, brought to Bevagna seven hundred years earlier by the town’s patron Saint, was in urgent need of repair. The Trust, together with the local parish and the town council, agreed to fund a complete restoration of the thirteenth century sculpture.
The finished work was unveiled in September of 2001 – an event that was warmly reported by the Italian national press – and can now be seen in the town’s museum. The project has restored a unique work of art and an object of great devotional value to the people of Bevagna.
