Restoration of ancient Irini Chapel and its Byzantine frescoes - Western Crete
ATG trip: Western Crete (Original Journeys)
Background: The Irini Chapel is of ancient origin. Set among olive groves, this tiny shepherds’ shrine is painted with highly evocative Byzantine frescoes.
Problem: The roof has caved in, sheep have broken through the fence, and the chapel looks completely abandoned. Regular visits by ATG groups have confirmed the alarming speed at which the dilapidation has worsened, exacerbated by earth tremors in Spring 2006.
Project: To restore the shrine and preserve the distinctive frescoes for future generations. The local representative from the Ministry of Culture is committed to undertake the work and a reliable contractor able to make the distinctive roof tiles has been found, but a substantial shortfall in funds remains.
Sustainability: This project aims to preserve a tiny monument in an unspoilt rural area. Once the work on the shrine has been completed, the local people will be happy to conserve it as part of their local heritage and as a feature of interest to visitors to the area.
