Damaraland Education and Vocational Training Centre, Namibia
ATG Trip: Discovering Namibia
Background: Damaraland’s spectacular landscape is home to the few remaining Desert Rhino, Desert Elephant and a wealth of
wildlife. The land is communally owned by the Damara, Himba and Herero Tribes, part of it leased as a conservation area.
Partnerships with tourism provide important revenue sources.
Problem: Rural people in Africa are unable to earn a revenue to sustain themselves. Frequently they lack skills in tourism
and a full understanding of managing their natural resources. They bear the brunt of tourism without gaining the financial
benefits.
Project: To build an educational facility aimed at all levels of society: Health and welfare education for women, natural
history education for school children; ranger / guide training, conservation and natural resource management for community elders
and senior councillors. The building itself will exemplify good environmental practice.
Sustainability: Educating local people to conserve, protect and earn a livelihood from their environment.
