Restoration of a pilgrim path - Pontremoli, Tuscany, Italy
This project was chosen as a special project to mark the 25th Anniversary of ATG. It entails implementing a Sustainable Tourism Master Plan in this depopulated and economically depressed region of Tuscany. By engaging with the local authorities and the communities in a way that is not only beneficial to them but also to their environment, the aim is to establish a model Sustainable Tourism Project that could be emulated elsewhere in Europe and perhaps further afield.
The project is to restore the pilgrim path between Casalina, Groppoli, Oronio Bianco, Gravagna and Groppo di Vescovo, which passes over the ridge and down to Bercetto. The stunning 7th – 10th C paths link outstanding Lombardic bridges. It is a pilgrim path of considerable history, which passes through an area of exceptional beauty.
Along side the restoration of the path the ATG and the Trust is working with the local community to develop a sustainable tourism product. This will entail developing accommodation from existing buildings, subsidiary walking routes aroung the Via francigena and promoting the area as a walking destination.
