Restoration of 13C Madonna and Child - Tuixent, Catalonia, Spain
For many years, our groups have been pausing at the remote church of Sant Esteve de Tuixent as they journey through the high sierras of Catalonia. Some of our clients and one of our Tour Leaders, applied to the ATG Trust to help revive one of the artefacts it houses – a striking statuette of the Madonna, of Byzantine inspiration, dating from the second half of the century XII or start of the XIII. The piece has suffered from years of neglect, without the necessary funding to maintain it, and an inappropriate restoration in the 1950's. The Virgin is dressed in a red robe decorated with flowers and a turquoise veil that covers her head and falls back stiffly. It is worn with some black shoes that appear under the robe. The crowned Virgin, with her son seated in her skirt, offers him to Man. The infant, with an adult expression, holds in his left hand an open book on his knees while with the right hand he blesses. In turn, the mother supports the boy with her left hand and with the right holds a ball, which represents the world. The restoration of the Madonna will be carried out by a highly skilled team from the Centre for the Restoration of Antiquities based in Barcelona.
The restoration of this piece is part of a more extensive project to improve and restore the interior of the church of Sant Esteve of Tuixent and will give the town a tourist attraction of great interest.
