Stations of the Cross: recovering the rural heritage of Bohemia
ATG trip: Renaissance Bohemia (Discovering Europe)
Fourteen wayside shrines mark the track through the forest, leading the way from the Czech village of Rozmberk to the chapel of St Anne that was built on the hill in 1679. These shrines, and others like them, are a characteristic feature of the Bohemian landscape. Sadly, the neglect and vandalism of the communist era put them almost beyond repair.
Almost. In the late 1990s a heritage conservation group was created under the name "Friends of Rozmberk." Among them was ATG’s Czech tour leader, Petra Mahrova, who brought the project to the attention of the ATG Trust.
Together, the ATG Trust and the Friends of Rozmberk have completed the huge task of restoring the Stations of the Cross. The carved granite shrines were re-erected and cleaned, the metal grills and crosses were replaced, and specially commissioned paintings have been fitted into place.
After long years of neglect, the villagers of Rozmberk are once again able to enjoy a small but important part of their rural heritage.
