The buildings at Pieve a Castello are predominantly proto-Romanesque, dating from 720-770 AD, with some later additions in the year 1000AD. Unique in central Italy is a fine octagonal building, with Lombard arcading, dating from 730AD, that was used as a baptistery and probably as a court. By 1986, the buildings had been abandoned and the church was no longer used. Pieve a Castello, then derelict, was sold (for the first time since 971AD) to ATG. It has since been restored by skilled craftsmen using old materials.

For 10 years Pieve a Castello has been run in an endeavour to return this unique complex of restored ancient buildings to its original use - providing hospitality to travellers. If you wish to stay at Pieve a Castello, the following trips spend time there.

Alternatively - villa rental

It is possible, subject to availability, to take a suite of rooms at Pieve a Castello. Suites accommodate 4, 6 or 8 people.

In addition to the bedrooms (all with private, en-suite facilities), each suite includes a kitchen with eating area and a spacious sitting room. There are also communal areas - pool, terraces, courtyard, garden and grounds. All rooms are cleaned daily.

The basis is 'self-catering' and the minimum stay is normally one week, Saturday to Saturday (although there are some shorter periods available).

Pieve a Castello is a short drive from a range of shops, and is unique in that it has a selection of 7 very good restaurants (and many others) within 10 minutes drive - including some with * and ** in the Guide Michelin.

Walking - A network of ancient walking routes fan out in all directions from Pieve a Castello, once an important focal point. Here two ancient routes joined: the Via Salaria, the 'salt route', from the sea and great Etruscan city of Volterra (20 miles away), and the Via Romea/Francigena, the 'main road of Europe' to Rome. These ancient routes still exist, as tracks and paths through forests and open country, providing over 100 miles of excellent walking. For keen walkers there is the opportunity of walking to world-renowned medieval cities such as San Gimignano and Siena.

You will receive a Footloose-style Route Booklet with 140 miles of walking from Pieve a Castello.

The entire complex
The whole of Pieve a Castello accommodates 18 people. If you would like your stay to be 'serviced' - with someone to prepare and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, this can be booked in advance.
